The Story

Renown Health’s hospitalists, the doctors who care for patients inside the hospital, had me DJ their holiday party at the Bonanza Casino in Reno, on a Sunday night in December.

The ballroom was already dressed for Christmas when I loaded in: blue and gold ornaments hanging from the gold ceiling, garland and wreaths over the windows, a tall tree in the corner and the buffet lined up along the wall. I set up at the edge of the dance floor and had music playing by 4:40.

Dinner was Christmas classics mixed with the 80s: Little Drummer Boy by the Harry Simeone Chorale, Walking On Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves, Walk Like an Egyptian by The Bangles, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing by Nat King Cole, Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree by Brenda Lee and It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas by Michael Bublé.

A little before 8 I switched to dance music with Play That Funky Music by Wild Cherry and I Wanna Dance With Somebody by Whitney Houston. Then came Wobble by V.I.C., Macarena by Los Del Rio, Gasolina by Daddy Yankee, Butter by BTS, the Cha Cha Slide by DJ Casper and Gangnam Style by PSY.

Later in the night it was sing alongs, Wannabe by the Spice Girls, Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) by the Backstreet Boys, Dancing Queen by ABBA and Y.M.C.A. by Village People, and the last stretch before 10 was Despacito by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee, Hey Ya! by OutKast and Pony by Ginuwine.
