The Story
The United States Pony Clubs held their national Convention at the Peppermill in Reno, and on Saturday, January 27, 2024, I DJ’d the awards banquet. About 275 members, parents and leaders came, from 6 years old to 80.
Through dinner and the awards program I kept it soft: River Flows In You, Mozart, Green Onions and In The Mood.
That afternoon the National Youth Board texted me their requests. When the host said “Now let’s party,” I opened the dance floor with Peanut Butter Jelly Time, and one girl screamed the moment it came on. The Cupid Shuffle came next, and the floor never emptied after that.
I mixed their list with songs for the parents and board members: Mr. Brightside, Timber, Suavemente, then a country run of Man! I Feel Like A Woman!, Wagon Wheel and Sweet Home Alabama. I kept the strobes and fog off for the older guests.
A few days later Erin, their Activities and Events Director, told me she had never stayed for a DJ’s full set before, and that she even got their executive out on the dance floor. One kid begged to stay up and took 10 minute power naps between songs to keep dancing, and the kids took turns wearing my hats.
